Stripe is the default when checkout, billing logic, product-led trials, invoices, and financial workflows need to be deeply shaped around the product. It is not the lowest-effort tax/compliance path, but it gives builders the most room.
Best fit
Developer-led SaaS teams that want maximum checkout, subscription, API, and ecosystem control.
Real data points
Stripe lists US online card pricing at 2.9% + 30 cents per successful card charge.
Stripe Billing and Stripe Tax are separate products layered onto the core payments platform.
Stripe Atlas is also available if the founder wants incorporation and payments in the same vendor ecosystem.
Pros
Stripe is the strongest builder platform in the payment set because the APIs, hosted checkout, billing primitives, tax add-ons, invoices, and financial tools can be composed around unusual product flows. That matters when a SaaS product needs trials, usage-based pricing, self-serve upgrades, enterprise invoices, or custom account logic without switching vendors.
The ecosystem depth is a major advantage: accountants, developers, analytics tools, subscription tools, and finance teams usually know how to work with Stripe data. For a technical founder, that reduces integration risk even when the product's billing model changes later.
Cons
Stripe gives you control, but it also leaves more operational responsibility with your company. Tax registration, customer billing support, refund policy, disputes, dunning choices, and revenue operations still need to be designed instead of being fully absorbed by a merchant-of-record provider.
The total cost can move beyond the headline card-processing rate once international cards, currency conversion, Stripe Billing, Stripe Tax, Radar, or other add-ons enter the stack. Founders should model the real blended rate, not just the base US online card fee.
Watch out
You still own more of the tax, dispute, refund, and billing-ops design unless you add Stripe Tax, Billing, and internal finance process.
